Chamnang (The Reflective) is a sculptural exploration related to my existing body of work, “The Asymmetry” project, which is a photographic print series. The sculptural form communicates the cultural and environmental impact of adopting neoliberal metropolitanism and the fast-growing consumerism of modern development. The mirror box reflects the contrast and tensions inherent in the relationship between urban development and preservation of architecture. The square geometric shape comprises of straight, stark edges that give a sense of stability, while the city is ironically losing its identity in this fast-growing urban change. The materials including mirror, grid steel and concrete which symbolizes the city landscape. The exterior of the sculpture suggests a sense of aging, deterioration and destruction with time. This work manifest signs of abandonment and forgotten identity, and aims to trigger our thoughts on our urban identity and our responsibilities toward these structures that bear so much cultural and historical value.
